I am not a professional Cosplayer but I know a few things. I hope these tips will help you. I mostly cosplay as a pirate. I try to keep it to period correct. Ok, maybe there are a few rules if you cosplay outdoors.

1. sunscreen goes on transparent so use it no matter what period you have decided to transport yourself to. Also, you can find hats, parasols, etc. for more protection. If you have a fantasy costume anything can be your protector from the sun. If you want to be period correct you have to search your decade.

Early umbrellas, or as they were known parasols, were designed by the Egyptians around 1000 B.C. The first models were made from feathers or lotus leaves, attached to a stick, and were used to offer shade to the nobility. -- quote from quality logo products

Yes, there is a difference between a parasol and an umbrella. Basically, a parasol is just for protecting you from the sun. Then umbrella can be used in all weather. Parasols are usually made of paper or another material not suitable for rain or other weather. Yes, you can find an umbrella that looks like your decade.

Generally, an umbrella has a curved handle to allow for easy grip and storage. A parasol, however, (in Latin para for “shelter or shield” and sol “sun”) is typically constructed from more delicate fabrics such as lace, cotton, silk, linen, canvas and plastic. --quote from art and culture

2. Stay hydrated indoors or outdoors, and especially if you are in humid heat stay hydrated with an electrolyte drink. My husband and I use Nuun.  Nuun has been a lifesaver. They sell both caffeinated (sport+ black labels) and decaffeinated. (sport white label) no, you do not have to be in sports to drink or buy this product. They are both all-natural. Non-GMO, Keto-friendly, Gluten-Free, Kosher. The caffeine comes from Green Tea. One tablet contains one cup of green tea.

Garb is what most of us call it. The rest will say costume.  So what is the one reason that someone would get upset when you ask about their "costume." Some will correct you. Here is the reason garb vs costume. When one spends time and money on the piece of clothing they chose to wear it becomes garb. When someone just runs to the store on Halloween and buys a prefabricated, low-cost, mass-produced costume it's a costume. Now my crew respects everyone's choice of pirate so you go out and find what works for you. Thrift stores work the best for finding something that might work for a 16th-century person. Yes, you are now in the 16th century, pirates were not clean fun, and cute that's what Hollywood has implanted into all of our minds. Things were not the best of times then but I'm sure they made it work. The super-rich vs the super poor. The materials back then were natural, cotton, hemp, wool, silk, patterned brocades, and sometimes velvet. This site gives good information on when picking out or even making something for the 16th-century attire. Period Fabrics

I have bought all of my pieces of garb. I do plan to make some simple things for the new and interested pirate. Some basic starter items so that one does not feel intimidated or like they need to break the bank to fit in with the rest. Our shop is called Pirate Bazaar.
